Having Izakaya with a friend in Shibuya, I got caught sketching one of the workers there. He ended up inviting us to his DJ gig later this month.

Yoyogi Park Rockabillies

Every Sunday in Yoyogi Park, there are two or three groups of rockabilies who dance furiously while tourists try to keep up with their cameras. I sketched these guys last year too, but this time I hope to get out there a few more Sundays.

Drew this guy Junpei at Dr. Sketchy’s monthly drawing workshop in Shibuya on Wednesday. The iPad gets a lot of attention but I’m still not sure if I like drawing with it; I kept switching back to paper. Maybe I just need more practice! It’s great for drawing in the dark but how often is that necessary? The animation feature of Brushes is more reliable than Painter’s scripts, so far.

It’s not always easy to sketch people on the Trains in Tokyo- but whenever I get a seat I pull out the sumi pen and mini-moleskin. More on the way.

Here’s another one I did on the plane to Tokyo. Brushes is fun but doesn’t let me cheat as much as Photoshop does… so in a way it feels more like real paint. I was psyched to discover BLENDING MODES in Brushes when I did this… so cool.

Brushes on iPad

Playing with Brushes on a Singapore Airlines flight to Tokyo. So far this is the only “can’t live without” feature for the iPad for me; sketching in the dark without the need for external lights, and recording the progress for playback. I can’t wait to see how this software develops… some of the other folks out there using it are getting amazing results.

Sketching this flight attendant was tricky, she wanted to stay still but obviously had to keep working. Later we had a laugh about it on my way off the plane (and NO, security was not escorting me!)

I did this goofy cartoon the other day. It amazes me how long this would have taken back in my school days – booking camera time, using an editing bay to splice in sound effects and blank leader for silence, inviting people to a theater or sending out video tapes. Now I can be this stupid really fast and show it to millions of people on Youtube!
